Re: Quantum Economics: The New Science of Money
After reading the sample I have some doubts about this book. I'm a bit worried about making money the centre of economics. My feeling is that it's possible to make enough stuff for everyone in the world to have a decent standard of living, but it's the inequalities of money that mean that so many a...

Five years of economic crisis
I'm interested in reading some of the books by Robert Skidelsky, in particular his views on inequality. I thought I'd start with this as it's a short book, even though it's not specifically about inequality - I'm sure a look at the recent economic crisis will be of interest. Did Quantitative Easing...

Quantum Economics: The New Science of Money
A long time ago I did a doctorate in Quantum Theory. I've also written a book on economics. So I thought I should read this book. In particular I think that there's an important link between economics as the study of many interacting individuals, and thermodynamics as the stuy of many interacting p...

Re: Should we have an advertising tax?
Maybe you think there's a better way of raising taxes. I've listed some alternative ways below. Which do you think should be implemented? (If you don't think the overall tax burden should increase you could think of your choice as substituting for other taxes) ⋅ Advertising ⋅ Hig...

Should we have an advertising tax?
Some time ago I heard someone complaining about the things that businesses could claim as expenses for tax purposes. One of these things was advertising, and the argument seemed to be that since this was an important factor in generating profits it shouldn't be allowed as an expense. This seemed to ...

Life on the Edge: The Coming of Age of Quantum Biology
I'm interested in protein folding and similar topics - the processes which form the basis of life on the microscale - and one of the important features of algorithms used is that they almost entirely use classical physics. Quantum theory must underlie the choice of forces, but it doesn't seem to be ...

Re: Utopia for Realists : And How We Can Get There
As I said previously, I read this book looking for arguments in favour of a universal basic income. Unfortunately I was disappointed. Let me make this clear: it wasn't that I disagreed with the arguments for UBI, it was that I found it hard to find any. Bregman starts by looking at some schemes wher...

First Impressions
The book starts by introducing us to system 1 and system 2 thinking. System 1 is intuitive thinking, while system 2 is more considered. So far it looks entertaining, and what Kahneman is saying makes a lot of sense. Will the book change the way I think - well I'll have to see about that.- Wed Jul 04, 2018 6:48 pm

Re: The Theory of Moral Sentiments
The book seems rather slow moving and ponderous, so maybe it's unlikely that it will introduce ideas in a compact form which are then developed in The Wealth of Nations . I can see what Smith is getting at though. We have natural sympathy with the feelings of others, but the amount of sympathy depe...

Newton and the counterfeiter
Isaac Newton is well known as a scientific genius. But trying to understand his thought processes is difficult, partly because the presentation of his scientific work has changed over time. I'm hoping this book will show a different side of Newton, and maybe get closer to the way his mind worked.
