Grand Pursuit: A History of Economic Genius

Why I looked at this book
I've read a few books on the history of economics, and have tried to read the original works of some of the early economists, Economics is often presented as the 'Dismal Science', which tells of the scarcity that exists in the world rather than trying to deal with it. The early economists such as Adam Smith are criticised for encouraging selfishness (rather unfairly in my view).

This book looks a bit different. It seems to start with Charles Dickens - not included in most histories of economics- and to show how the work of economists have brought benefits to us all. I found A Beautiful Mind a very interesting book to read, so I'm hoping that this will be an equally stimulating work, although I do wonder how Nasar seems to be able to put forward such a different view of economics.
