The Discarded Image

Postby system3 » Wed Sep 25, 2019 5:45 am

In Lewis's 1954 inaugural speech he looked at how we divide up history, and in particular what separates us from 'Old Western Man'. His conclusion was that it wasn't so much the Medieval/Renaissance divide or even the Scientific revolution of the 17th Century, but mostly the mechanization of the early 19th Century.
But on reading The Discarded Image I get the feeling that the Religious condemnationsi of the 13th Century were also a candidate. Later writers such as Chaucer would be steeped in classical ideas, but would also be constantly aware of the power of the Church. Does this seem reasonable? Does The Discarded Image suggest that Lewis recognized this change?
