Eating your pet pig.

Postby system3 » Thu Nov 21, 2019 1:24 pm

In the past many families would keep a pig, feed it on scraps, and then have it slaughtered to provide meat for the winter. Pigs are intelligent creatures, and I would expect that it was often treated much like a pet. But its meat was a vital part of the family’s food. In this case the line between what is acceptable and what is not is in a completely different place to today's norms.
The questioners in Haidt’s study in The Righteous Mind seem to be worrying away at this line, trying to make a kink in it. Either we should accept that it’s reasonable for people to stick to the line that they have drawn, or we should argue that the line is largely arbitrary, shouldn’t we? Is there anything ‘reasonable’ about worrying away at the line?
